Electric Vehicle Rally: London to Brighton

Electric Vehicle Rally: London to Brighton

In association with Fully Charged the Big Lemon London to Brighton Electric Vehicle Rally event was held on Saturday 18th September 2021, to demonstrate and celebrate the rapid development of electric vehicles and renewable energy.

Starting on the banks of the River Thames and finishing on Brighton Beach, the electric vehicle rally was open to participants with electric vehicles of all types, shapes and sizes, with prizes for the lowest energy consumption in all classes.

The 60-strong entries included celebrities Norman Cook (Fat Boy Slim), Charley Boorman, Mark Lester and Robert Llewellyn, covering the 58-mile distance.

The RAC were the roadside assistance partner for the Rally and were following the event in standard patrol vehicles equipped with the Original ADS Charge Pod system so that RAC patrols could deliver a roadside power boost to quickly get any flat or severely charge depleted EVs to the nearest static charging station had they ran out of charge during the event.

Charge Pod proved to be the perfect solution for this problem because the system can be installed on standard patrol vehicles whilst only taking up a very small amount of room. This means the RAC patrol vehicles can still be packed with all the other equipment needed to be able to fix any other motoring issues these EVs may have encountered.

Fully Charged Live Event

Fully Charged Live Event

It was great to be apart of the fantastic Robert Llewellyn’s Fully Charged Live show in Farnborough from 3rd-5th September with our incredible partners, the RAC.

Fully Charged Live was created by TV personality, Robert Llewellyn (from Scrapheap Challenge, Junkyard Wars and Red Dwarf), the three-day event showcased a host of quality outdoor exhibits and attractions including two live theatres, over 100 EVs and over 100 exhibitors of clean energy and EV related technologies.

We were on hand along with various members of the RAC to answer crucial questions about what happens if EV drivers run out of charge before they are able to reach a static charging station.

The solution is the Original ADS Charge Pod system. Charge Pod is often considered as the ‘jerrycan’ for EVs. Its purpose is simply to provide flat or severely charge depleted EVs with power boost delivered from a standard patrol vehicle so they can be driven to the nearest static charging station rather than being picked up and recovered on flatbed recovery truck.

Charge Pod is being rolled out across the RAC’s fleet and will be installed on one in five RAC patrol vans by 2022. Thus, providing the crucial reassurance to EVs drivers that help is on hand should you be unlucky enough to reach a charging point that isn’t working or to run out power and be left stranded.

It was wonderful to have such a great reception from the public and fleet operators on how our pioneering Charge Pod system has enhanced the capability of the RAC’s fleet.

Did you catch a glimpse of our Charge Pod system on the BBC programme Dom Digs in: Roadside Assistance

The episode features Dom Littlewood working as a mechanic with roadside assistance company, the RAC, to find out what it takes to help keep the UK’s motorists moving, around the clock, seven days a week.

To enable the RAC to deliver this service, it is essential that patrol vehicles are packed with all kinds of equipment to deal with a wide variety of motoring issues. This means any equipment implemented to patrol vehicles needs to be as lightweight and compact as possible.

The Original ADS Charge Pod is the perfect solution for the problem of flat and/or severely depleted EV’s. Not only is the system considerably lighter and far more compact than portable batteries but it also offers 100% duty cycle, so it never runs out of charge and is always ready for use, making the perfect soltuion for roadside assistance companies.

RAC EV Boost (Charge Pod) and Wireless Trailer Board Feature on ITV Tonight

RAC EV Boost (Charge Pod) and Wireless Trailer Board Feature on ITV Tonight

The Original ADS Charge Pod also known as RAC EV Boost and Wireless Trailer Board feature with the RAC on ITV’s current affairs series, ITV Tonight.

This episode named Cars: The End of Petrol and Diesel was created in light of the 2030 target for banning the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles.

During the programme, TV presenter Ginny Buckley set up a sequence where she deliberately ran an EV flat at the roadside to see exactly what happens to the vehicle and what kind of recovery is available for EV drivers.

Because the RAC are equipped with the Original ADS Charge Pod (RAC EV boost), they are able to deliver a power boost from their standard patrol vehicles that are currently in service due to the fact that Charge Pod is lightweight, compact, and offers 100% duty cycle of power.

This has proved to be an essential service for the RAC’s EV drivers as they have identified a trend occurring:

“Many of our patrols have been going to people at out of order charge points, so even if a person has planned their journey very carefully, they are frustrated that it’s not working”.

It is, therefore, critical that the RAC are able to provide a convenient out of fuel service to the growing number of EV customers.

Charge Pod features on EV Cafe in LIVE demonstration with the RAC

Charge Pod features on EV Cafe in LIVE demonstration with the RAC

It was great to see our Charge Pod system in action during the live demonstration conducted by the  RAC on the fantastic The EV Cafe webinar on Wednesday.

The EV Charge Pod is a mobile electrical boost system developed to provide flat or severely depleted electric vehicles with a roadside power boost so they can be driven to the nearest static charging point rather than being picked up and recovered on a flatbed truck. Charge Pod enables you to provide the same “out of fuel” service as you would to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles to the growing EV market.

Due to the system being lightweight, compact and offering a 100% duty cycle of power, Charge Pod is extremely popular with companies who support (i.e., vehicle rescue and roadside assistance companies), transportation companies, and/or companies with storage facilities for electric vehicles (such as docks).

It was great to see the EV Cafe discussing this pioneering technology.

Charge Pod was on call for another carwow Youtube video this week to provide an electric boost as the battery range of VWs latest electric model, the ID 3 was tested.

Having started their journey in Milton Keynes, an RAC patrol van equipped with the Charge Pod solution along with our team, joined the carwow Youtube video crew at Wetherby service station and followed the team for the remainder of their journey.

The vehicle managed to reach Bedale in North Yorkshire (c.190 miles) before the battery run out of charge, Charge Pod then gave the vehicle a boost, so it was able to reach a charging station. However, a problem occurred when the car reached the static charging point.

The charging station failed to recognise the power level that the vehicle could accept and as a result, it proceeded to charge the vehicle considerably slower than the said capability of the ID 3.

Coincidentally, when we arrived at Wetherby service station, we happen to spot an MG ZS being driven off a flatbed recovery truck accompanied by a very fed up EV user as we arrived. After speaking to the driver, he informed us that when he reached a charging station on his journey, it failed to operate. He then did not have enough charge to reach an alternative charger. As the MG driver had roadside assistance included in his vehicle warranty, he was very frustrated that he had to endure a sub-standard and inconvenient solution to his problem when Charge Pod is clearly more suitable for the circumstances.

With the uncertainty of the reliability of the current charging infrastructure, the importance for roadside assistance companies to provide a convenient and reliable solution for the problem of flat or severely depleted EVs is crucial as people begin making the switch to electric vehicles.
