There are many reasons for companies to switch to electric vans. However, electric vans can also have their disadvantages. One of the main concerns with electric vans is range anxiety and range variation. Most vehicle manufacturers state a range of 100 miles, but it is more likely to see around 80 miles in practice. This is because vehicle range is dramatically impacted by factors including payload, driving style and weather conditions. Therefore, as we switch to electric vans, it is understandable that some drivers may not be aware of these range variations and may find themselves caught short of a few miles and be left stranded at the roadside and unable to reach a static charging station.

This was the case for one van driver in central London, who phoned the RAC for assistance.

Fortunately, the RAC have anticipated this problem and have installed the perfect solution onto their patrol vehicles. Charge Pod has been designed to provide any flat or severely depleted EVs with a power boost so they can be driven to a static charging station, rather than being picked up and recovered on a flatbed truck. This enables companies like the RAC to provide the same “out of fuel” service as it would to internal combustion engine vehicles.
